Holy cow! Good news sources are so hard to find in the USA. I’ve always trusted The Guardian. That’s why I am so shocked to discover that the bottom row of “news” stories, “More from around the web”, is fake news from Outbrain, make to look just like the row above. They are paid “news” stories! I saw one about auto insurance in Colorado, where I live. I clicked on it. I became suspicious, since it led me to a survey collecting private information, seeming like one of many questionable sites that do that. I searched the web for discussions of the site, insurance.comparisons.org. It’s even a .org, further leading me to think it’s a reasonable site! All the discussion I found suggests that it is not, that it is harvesting personal information to sell/give to insurance companies to make sales calls!
I’m removing The Guardian from my reading list. It is so sad. I can’t read the local news because they’ve gone behind a paywall. I can’t read major national media because they are so business-dominated, crass and commercial. Now another source has gone opportunistic and therefore suspect.
