How many people are there on the Earth?

A climate researcher, Jacob Schewe, wrote an article about climate change and clean water resources, stating that there are six billion people on the Earth, now.  This is published in The Conversation, which has a tagline of “Academic Rigour, Journalistic Flair”, on Dec. 23, 2013.  This misstatement is in the second paragraph.  It begs the question… why did no one catch this incredible error?
